Context
Apple’s crash detection for the iPhone 14 and new Apple Watch models can alert 911 and emergency contacts in the event of a collision. But it sometimes triggers when people aren’t in danger. Crash Detection is a new feature that uses various sensors and machine learning to determine if a user has been in a car crash. Lately, emergency call centers in ski regions have been inundated with inadvertent, automated calls, dozens or more a week. Phone operators often must put other calls, including real emergencies, on hold to clarify whether the latest siren has been prompted by a human at risk or an overzealous device. In Colorado, the Summit County Dispatch Center reports between 40 to 60 fakes 911 calls a day. Team members expect this only to get worse as the season picks up for skiers. Trina Dummer, interim director of Summit County’s emergency services said that the onslaught was threatening to desensitize dispatchers and divert limited resources from true emergencies. While Apple says there isn’t a silver bullet for being able to tell the difference between a car crash and a roller coaster or skier. The company touts the times lives are saved as a reason to keep the feature on
